Towards the fulfilment of the #E4SD project of the Uyo Hub to build sustainable communities through the deploying of the SDGs, on Thursday 24th December, 2015 the Uyo Hub had its first “Meet the Leader” session with Mr Utip Ekong. In company, his Twin Sister Miss Kokomma Ekong who is the CEO EKNGroup and Mst. Gideon Utip Ekong.
Mr Ufot Ekong, the Nigerian student, who graduated with a First Class degree and as the best overall student from Tokai University in Tokyo, Japan. Ekong, who is from Akwa Ibom, is the the first Nigerian to achieve the aforementioned feat since 1965, and also solved a mathematical equation that could not be solved in his first semester. Also, Ekong won a Japanese language award for foreigners, in addition to two patents under his name for developing an electric car. He is currently working with Nissan. The most intriguing part was that he not only shared his success story but included the details of his fight with defeat and how he broke the glass ceiling to get there and when he got there, he stayed there.
The ‘Meet The Leader’ session was a great advantage as it created the platform to build much needed collaboration for the hubs #E4SD. The focus for #E4SD, is to create a solution that can deliver high-quality education year in and year out, while keeping costs to a minimum. After much research, we found that the highest impact way to accomplish this is to provide a library and a projector to classrooms, and empower teachers with creative lessons and comprehensive training as we mentor the students on the need to stay in school and go through school. To develop engaging, activity-based lessons, a partnership was created with Reading House Africa.
Education planners have to look beyond counting the number of children sitting in classrooms and start to focus on learning.
